If you live in Bletchley, Milton Keynes or anywhere nearby and you’re looking for a good, honest, family-run garage to get your car serviced then I suggest look look no further than Milton Keynes Tyre and Brake (MKT&B).

Every single time I’ve used the garage to get work done they’ve ended up charging me less than I was quoted! They’re friendly, welcoming and always happy to help.

It’s not often that I’m compelled to endorse a company but I bought a new car recently and had a bit of work done under warranty by the main dealer. The way that particular franchise treated my car really underlined why I’ve been using MKT&B for so many years now. Despite the timely phone calls for servicing from the main dealer I shall be sticking with Milton Keynes Tyre and Brake for the foreseeable. So often we moan about poor service that I thought I’d readdress the balance here.

Updated: 25th November

We’ve got two wireless phones in our house that receive a signal from a central pod from the master BT point. The phones work fine, except when stood in certain areas of the house. In these peculiar areas we get a buzzing noise in the phone. I’ve no idea why this is. Anyone know?

Also, in electrical weirdness – we’ve had constant power surges over the weekend. I can list about five times when the lights in our house have gotten brighter for no apparent reason. Whilst using the computer this happened and was accompanied by the sound of static interference in my computer speakers. Very odd. What might be causing this I wonder?

Update: I arrived home on tuesday night to discover much of the pavement along our side of the road having been dug up with cones demarking danger. Since then we’ve not succumbed to any power surges. Two days later we’ve still got holes and cones all over the place but my lightbulbs are a lot happier.

I still don’t know why the phone buzzes though.

But don’t forget: Wasps do a great deal of help in the garden by consuming large numbers of caterpillars and other plant pests. Weigh up the pros and cons: avoid a stinging or help the plants.

We are unfortunate enough to have a microbore central heating system. For a plumbing simpleton like myself this complex system serves up a few headaches when I need to remove radiators for decorating. Microbore is supposed to be quite an efficient system that reduces heat loss through pipework but it also lends itself to pipe clogging because the pipes are typically only 8 or 10mm in diameter. I’ve posed a question on the DIYnot.com ‘microbore heating’ forum (under the alias of ‘funkydung’. If anybody else is in the same position as me, or has the answers, I’m keen to know exactly how one might remove radiators from a microbore system in order to do some decorating.

I feel I’m not alone in thinking that there’s a plot afoot to make black sound and vision products like TVs and Hi-F’s obsolete. Everything seems to be available these days but only in silver. You can get flat screens, wide screens, cinema screens and plasma screens but try getting one with a black shell. You’ll have a job. It seems that all manufacturers think that silver is the new black and are forcing us to replace our old crumbly black TV sets with silver versions. The annoying thing is that I hate silver stuff. I particularly dislike silver TVs. However, these silver things have been around for a few years now and the cycle of things suggests to me that the manufacturers must be ganging up to decide on changing back to black in the near future. Surely? We’re all aware of the five year life of electrical goods these days already forcing regular repurchases. The cunning thing is that manufacturers play on people’s desires to match their TV with their hi-fi thus ensuring that all electrical goods are re purchased when one of them goes ka-put. What’s your view?

Have you had any good/bad experiences with UK double glazing companies?

Please comment on your good and bad experiences with Anglian Windows, Zenith Windows, Coldseal, Everest and indeed any other double glazing sales company. Comments on this post may be edited for legal reasons. Any comments threatening violence to any company or person will be deleted and the person posting the comments will be banned from posting again. All opinions on this post reflect the individual authors are may not represent the opinions of the author of this site.

Please also note that the sales and construction aspects of double glazing are often dealt with by two entirely different teams. Just because you have dealt with a bad salesman it doesn’t automatically mean that the product is bad and vice versa. So, I’m interested in hearing any of your comments on both the sales technique/customer care and you impression of the product itself.

For a public service corporation the BBC (beeb) don’t exactly make their web access particularly easy! Anyway, incase you’re hunting for the settings for your beeb.net account (as my mum is), I’ve provided some info below

Visit www.beeb.net and look towards the top of the screen for the horizontal nav bar (a left to right bullett list with the options greyed out making it difficult to see!).

Click on ‘Webmail‘ and login using your username (that’s the bit in your email address before the .beeb.net part) and password (you should know this, if not then I’m afraid that you’re going to have to phone the 60p a minute hotline!). Your password will have been chosen by you so think along the lines of your favourite animal, mother’s maiden name or anything else you’re likely have picked off the top of your head.

OK, now, here’s the tricky bit. You’re presented with a screen (http://webmail.beeb.net/) that is apparently for you’re webmail, however, it’s more than that. It also provides a link to your account information and settings. They’re all nicely hidden away by a link that is labelled ‘here‘. Good eh? “Where is it” I hear you cry? Indeed – it certainly is well hidden on the left hand side of the page in the blue box labelled ‘webmail’. Click on the word ‘here‘ at the end of the sentence:

“To add e-mail addresses, change your passwords or administer your account click here.”

So, do just that, click the tiny link.

OK, this is the screen you’ve been looking for. You will have the following information (yep, more uses of the word ‘here’ as a link. My notes in brackets):

Service Offering

You are currently subscribed to the Pay-as-you-go package.

Domains

You can access your website using the following URLs:

http://username.members.beeb.net/ (I’ve changed the bit before .members. It will be your own username)

Dial-Up Configuration

PC Users: click here to download a new dial-up configuration file (this is configured to you so I cant link to it from here, sorry).

Mac Users: Click here to view configuration information

(The following is really useful to set up things yourself)

Manual Dial-Up Configuration

If you wish to configure your PC manually, please use the following settings:

To access the Internet, dial: 0845 212 5000

Your mail (SMTP) server is available at: smtp.beeb.net

Your POP server is available at: pop3.beeb.net

Further Help

You can contact the help desk on 090 66 500 600.

It is open from 8am to 12 midnight and calls cost 60p per minute. (Expensive isn’t it? So don’t bother unless you’ve completely forgotten your password).

UPDATE: Somebody from the BBC has contacted me. If you want to quickly get to the admin area, you go here: https://www.admin.beeb.net/.

I hope this helps.
